ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Wednesday urged the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) not to award the “drummer” symbol to its splinter group, the PTI-Nazriati.
In a letter to Pakistan’s Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, the PTI said it had learned that a political party had recently been registered with the ECP and had requested the provision of a symbol of “drummer”.
The PTI is the largest party in the country having a large number of deputies in the National Assembly, the decision to assign the symbol of “drummer” to the PTI Nazriati will create confusion among voters.
PTI urged ECP to learn about the case and take action against the founders of PTI Nazriati.

In 2016, PTI moved to the Lahore High Court and challenged ECP’s decision to award this symbol to several independent candidates in local elections.
Umar Sarfraz Cheema, who was then PTI’s deputy chief organizer in Punjab, argued that LHC ordered ECP to remove the “drummer” symbol and assign affected contestants to another symbol within 10 days.
However, the ECP did not follow the order, saying that the election symbols for LG Elections were proposed by the provincial local government department.
