HC rejects AIADMK symbol freeze request

The applicant had seized the Court without even waiting a week for the ECI

The Madras High Court on Thursday imposed a cost of Rs 25,000 on a PIL petitioner, who asked the Indian Election Commission to freeze the AIADMK’s “Two Leaves” symbol.

The petition is filed for publicity purposes only, First Bench Chief Justice M. N. Bhandari and Justice N Mala said, while dismissing public interest litigation from City resident PA Joseph, who claimed to be the founding president of the JJ Party.

The petition asked the EC to consider its representation dated June 28 to take necessary action against rival AIADMK groups and freeze the “Two Leaf” symbol, until disputes between Edappadi K Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam be resolved, to protect public order and peace in the state.

In his petition, Joseph made allegations against Palaniswami vis-à-vis the leadership struggle of the party, where the mainstream group supporting the former chief minister is pushing for him to take the sole leadership.

The applicant had applied to the Court without even waiting a week for the ECI. The motion was filed solely for cheap advertising, the bench said, and dismissed it in limine.
