The Katy soap factory launches a range of soaps on the theme of Houston

What do the Houston Astros smell like? According to the soap makers at Buff City Soap in Katy, it’s citrus and bergamot.

The Soap Shop’s “Hey, Batter Batter” scent mimics the Astros’ vintage logo design and smells like orange juice – a nod to Minute Maid Park.

“We thought a nice citrus smell would go better than the smell of sweaty athletes and hot dogs, but still fit the Astros theme,” manager Karen McClelland said with a laugh.

Buff City Soap, which offers a line of soaps, bath fizzies, laundry products and body care items, also specializes in fragrances that celebrate the Houston area. Buff City partners with local icons like Karbach Brewing Co. and the Space Cowboys.

All soaps are plant-based and contain no harsh chemicals, said soap maker Yessi Moreno. Products are produced in-house and are fully customizable.

“We have a lot of fun partnerships, but my favorite right now is our collaboration with Karbach,” Moreno said. “We have their Hopadillo and Love Street beers, and we’ve actually made soaps that match those.”

Karbach representatives met with Buff City to share their key ingredients and tasting notes, Moreno said, and Buff City concocted a soap to match.

Love Street, for example, features citrus essences, light florals and woodsy scents, Moreno explained. “The soaps actually contain beer, so it’s even more authentic,” she added.

Buff City’s latest scent on the horizon, “Space Cowboys,” has yet to debut, but is expected to launch later this month. The soap is dark blue with orange swirls that match the colors of the Sugar Land Space Cowboys.

The kids at Texas Children’s Sugar Land will be the first to try Space Cowboys soap when it’s ready to launch. Buff City is launching its next fragrance by donating the soaps to children receiving hospital care. Because Buff City soaps are all-natural, they’re great for patients’ delicate skin, Moreno said.

“Giving back to the community is something we really care about,” McClelland said. “Soaps can be so boring for kids, so shiny designs are really fun for them, and donating these soaps is one of the ways we give back.”
